These tiles are examples of Rauzy fractals. They are examples of Substitution Tilings with the volume hierarchic property. This means that the tiles can be fitted together to form larger versions of themselves. More details on the Nautilus and Conch are available in a short pdf and the original paper. These tiles were exhibited at the 2008 Bridges Conference in Leeuwarden.

The tiles make a great puzzle as they can be fitted together in many different ways.
